He was Knight of the Garter, 2nd Earl of Huntingdon, 4th Lord Hastings. Lieutenant general and Chief Captain of the Army and fleet for service abroad. Lord Lieutenant of the counties of Rutland, Leicester, Derby and Warwick, Privy Councillor, Master of the Harthounds.

He was the son and heir of Sir George Hastings and Anne Stafford. He was born about 1514. He was husband of Katherine Pole, elder daughter of Sir Henry Pole, Lord Montagu, descendant of King Edward III by Jane Neville, daughter of Sir George, Lord Bergavenny, also a descendant of King Edward III. They were married on June 25, 1532 by papal dispensation dated 11 July 1531 as they were related in the 3rd and 4th degrees, in Ashby, Leicestershire, England

They had six sons and five daughters:

Francis carried St Edward's staff at the coronation of Edward VI in 1547, was engaged in suppressing rebellions in Rutland and Leicester in 1549, Captain of the Vanguard forces to the Queen in 1558.
Francis died testate at Ashby la Zouch, Katherine died intestate sixteen years later.
