DEATH OF M'RAE DUE TO ACCIDENT

Prominent Physician Was Leader in His Profession and Acknowledged Authority on Appendicitis

Death as the result of an accidental pistol shot was the verdict of the coroner's jury which Saturday afternoon investigated the death of Dr. Floyd S. McRae, Sr., who was found dead in his room at the home, 1014 Peachtree Street, earlyh Saturday morning.

The jury expressed the belief that the wound which caused the death of one of Atlanta's most brilliant and sucessful surgeons was inflicted when Dr. McRae, in a stooping position at the time, dropped his revolver upon the floor and the weapon was accidentally discharged.

The bullet caused a wound above the right ear, the skull on the left side of the head being crushed.

Dr. Floyd McRae, Jr., was the principal witness at the inquest and testified that his father had no reason for taking his own life. He added that his father had no worries, was methodical and efficient in his work up to the time of his death. A short time ago, he suffered a collapse, but had recovered and resumed his practice.

He performed two operations Friday and was to have operated again at 8 o'clock Saturday morning.

Saturday morning by members of the family, who heard a shot and rushed to the room. Death was instantaneous.

Funeral services will be held on Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock from the residence, 1014 Peachtree Street, the Rev. J. Sprole Lyons, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, assisted by the Rev. Samuel E. Wasson, pastor of St. Mark's Methodist Episcopal Church, officiating. Burial will be in West View, with H. M. Patterson & Son, in charge.

An honorary escort from the Fulton Medical society will be in attendance: Drs. J. B. Baird, Sr., Bates Block, W. A. Crowe, J. G. Ernest, W. S. Elkin, L. S. Hardin, W. A. Nicholson, H. H. Noble, Sr., Dunbar Ray, W. F. Westmoreland and J. C. Johnson.

TOPPED PROFESSION -
He stood at the top of his profession and was recognized as an authority on operations for appendicitis. He was held in the highest esteem by members of the medical fraternity and a wide circle of friends.

Dr. Floyd Willcox McRae, son of Mordock Hugh and Elizabeth T. Wilsox/McRae and grandson of Alexander McRae, was born 12/6/1861, in Telfair county. He was educated in the public and private schools of the county, and at the R. E. Lee Institute, Thomaston. He commenced the sudey of medicine in 1881 at Lumber City, under the preceptorship of Dr. James H. Latimer, and attended two courses of lectures at the Atlanta Medical college, Atlanta, and was graduated with honors in March, 1885.

The prominent surgion took post-graduate courses at the New York Polytechnic and at the New York Post Graduate Medical School and Hospital in 1887 and both again in 1890.

Dr. McRae had practiced medicine and surgery in Atlanta since June 1885. He was a member of the American Medical Association and secretary of the section on surgery and anatomy; member of the Pan-American Medical congress, the Southern Surgical Gynocological Association, the Medical association of the State of Georgia, and of the Atlanta Society of Medicine, of which he was president in 1892. He had been a member of and was former secretary of the state board of health' was demonstrator of anatomy in the Atlanta Medical College from 1885 to 1893; was connected with the Southern Medical college and prominently identified with the Atlanta College of Physicians and Surgeons since it was formed from the merger of the other two.

He married in March 1883, Miss Fannie Collier, daughter of the late Judge John Collier, of Atlanta. Their childre are: Floyd Willcox McRae, Jr., Kenneth Collier McRae and John Collier McRae, two of whom, Floyd and John, have been associated with their father in the practice of medicine for the past few years.
