CARBONDALE – Mary Margaret Johnson, 94, of 712 S. University Ave. passed away Monday, May 18, 1992, in City Care Nursing Home in Anna.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Huffman-Harker Funeral Home, with the Rev. Suzanne Webb officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Rebecca services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Johnson was born Oct. 19, 1897, near Barlow, Ky. to Francis W. [Francis M.] and Elenora (Cummines) Underhill.

She married Chester S. Johnson on Jan. 22, 1915. He died July 20, 1951.

For many years she was a house mother for hundreds of Southern Illinois University students. She was fondly known as "Mom J" to family, friends and students.

She was a long time member of the First Christian Church in Carbondale and the Rebecca Lodge.

Those left to cherish her memory are her sons, Chester F. Johnson, Charles E. Johnson and Billy Lee Johnson, all of Carbondale, James F. Johnson of Upper Montclair, N.J., Jack B. Johnson of La Mirada, Calif., Jerry J. Johnson of Pleasanton, Calif., Carl J. Johnson of Murphysboro and Gary D. Johnson of Baton Rouge, La.; 29 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Her parents, husband, two infant sons, three grandsons, four sisters and four brothers preceded her in death. One son, Richard E. Johnson, 63, of Santa Maria, Calif., preceded her in death June 24, 1991.
