Paul & Alice (TELFORD) HANNA – A Biography by Grandson Donald Johnson

Paul Gray HANNA was born 10 JUL 1902 in rural Lone Grove Township, Fayette County, IL. His parents were the late Dr. Homer Luther "H L" & Martha Jane (GRAY) HANNA. His parents had 12 children (birth order): Bertha, Gail, Clyde, Paul, Mary, Ruth, Leona, Leota (Leona's twin that died at birth), Ada, Dwight, Robert, and Beauford. Early in his life, Paul's family moved to Kinmundy where he went to school through the 8th grade.

Alice Audrey TELFORD was born 05 JAN 1904 in Kell, Marion County, IL. Her parents were the late Arthur Alexander & Katherine "Kitty" (MAFFITT) TELFORD. Her parents had three daughters (birth order): Leta, Alice, and Irene. She grew up in rural Cartter, IL, went to Kell for grade school, and Carbondale for high school. Alice was a seamstress until she was 18, and then she started teaching grade school.

Paul & Alice met and were subsequently married on 31 DEC 1931 in Pinckneyville, Perry County, IL. They then had 4 children together over the next 11 years (birth order): Robert Gray "Bob", Beverly Ann, Whitney Rae, and John Anthony.

While they raised their children they moved between Kell and Kinmundy, IL and then settled in Kinmundy for the rest of their lives. Both Paul & Alice were known as strict disciplinarians by their children & grandchildren.

Just after Paul married Alice, he was employed by a construction company at New Harmony, IN. Paul also worked as a farmer, saw mill operator, cat skinner, and truck driver. For a time he trained family-owned horses for harness racing, where the horses race in a specified gait and pull two-wheeled carts called sulkies. In 1956 Paul was seriously injured when his tractor rolled over him breaking both feet and one leg – he was able to pull himself into his truck and used his hands on the petals to drive to Kell to get help. Paul was non-religious.

Alice attended Southern Illinois University for four summers to acquire a permanent teaching certificate, teaching in between. She taught for many years at a number of schools including Villa Grove Schools and Kell Grade School. She also served as school principal for a time in Wamac, IL. She enjoyed quilting and made quilts for many of her grandchildren. She was a good cook who made an excellent lemon meringue pie. She also enjoyed scrapbooking. She was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a long-time member of the Kinmundy United Methodist Church.

Paul & Alice had a total of 16 grandchildren born between 1955 and 1979. Their first great-grandchild was born in 1974 and many more were born before they passed away.

Late in life, Alice spent much time in the hospital with respiratory problems and heart pains. She passed away on 03 OCT 1982 at age 78 at Doctors Nursing Home in Salem, Marion County, IL. Paul died on 12 FEB 1985 at age 82 at Twin Willows Nursing Home in Salem, IL after a lengthy stay there with respiratory problems that culminated in unresolved pneumonia. Paul & Alice are buried next to each other with a joint gravestone in the southeast section (HANNA Row) of Evergreen Cemetery in Kinmundy, IL.
