Helen Wilda Songer, 93, of Our Lady of the Alleghenies Residence in Hollidaysburg, formerly of Hawthorn, died Saturday, March 30, 2013, at the Residence.

Born March 26, 1920, she was the daughter of Arlington J. and Ruth (Brown) Deily.

She married Fred Songer on June 20, 1942. He preceded her in death in 1974.

Mrs. Songer was a graduate of Clarion University. She taught English and Latin for 32 years in high schools in Clarion, Hawthorn, Clarion-Limestone, East Brady and Redbank Valley in New Bethlehem. Mrs. Songer was a faithful Sunday school teacher for many years at the Calvary United Methodist Church in Hawthorn. She was a member of Christ's Community United Methodist in Altoona. She was a member of the Clarion County Retired Teachers Association, Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees and a former member of the New Bethlehem Chapter No. 230 Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Songer reveled in her family and her friends. She enjoyed swimming, playing bridge, cooking and sewing. She was an avid fan of Penn State athletics and the Steelers.

Survivors include two daughters, Jill Walker and her husband, Denny, of Altoona, and Vicky Free and her husband, Blair, of Kutztown; three grandchildren, Shaena Kershner, Micah Longo and Melissa Walker; and a sister, Verda Seigworth in Florida.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Wilbur "Bud" Deily.

At the request of the deceased, there will be no public viewing. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family by the Rev. Peter Raser.

Interment will be in Hawthorn Cemetery.

Arrangements are at the direction of The Stevens Mortuary Inc. of Altoona.
