James Ashby Gooden, 86, formerly of Rocky Bar, died Wednesday morning, Sept. 22, 2010, in the Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born Dec. 18, 1923, in Rockingham County, and was a son of the late Ashby and Annie Crawford Gooden.

He was a member of the Saint Stephens, the Good Shepard Episcopal Church in Rocky Bar. He was a retired utility worker employed by
Rocco.

He was married to the former Hazel Lucille Morris, who died Jan. 13, 2009.

He is survived by one daughter, Carole Yvonne Propst of Rocky Bar; two grandsons, Timothy James Propst and Mathew Scott Propst; one brother, Prentice Gooden of Elkton; one sister, Beulah Dean of McGaheysville; and one great-grandson, Logan Dewitt Propst.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in the Port Republic Cemetery by the Rev. John Via.

The family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Kyger-Pence Funeral Home of McGaheysville.
