On June 14, 1916 he married Bessie Graves, daughter of Rachael Sarah Nicholas and William John Graves of Mitchell County, Iowa.
Hugh had a 240 acre farm where he raised corn, oats, and hay. He purchased 5 purebred heifers and their cattle grew to large numbers. Hugh employed hired hands to help with the farming.
They remained faithful, active members of the David Baptist church, David, Iowa.
To this union was born a son
1. William "Roger" Minnis b. 1925 m. Anita Mae Swancutt. They have two children: Leland, and Iris.
Roger and Anita farmed the same land that Roger's parent's owned.
