He married Celestia Crowson on 16 Sep 1856 and they had one known son, George born in 1858, before Celestia's death in 1861.
On 30 Apr 1862, James enlisted and served with Co. B, 12th Virginia Light Artillery. He was promoted to Full Ordance Sergeant by June of that year and the Unit engaged in many battles May 1863 through April 1865.
During his military tenure in Virginia, James met then married Mattie Purvis on 20 Jun 1865. They had three children, two of whom died before 1900.
He and Mattie returned to Greensboro where he resumed his trade as a publisher of several different newspapers over the years in Greensboro and then Asheville. He was quite prominent in the communities and his autobiographic writings and transcripts are now in the Wilson Library as UNC Chapel Hill.
The couple relocated to Asheville in their elder years and resided near their oldest child, Clara, and her family.
