He was the son of Gilbert Bogart Taylor and and Lydia Annin and was born in Liberty Corners, New Jersey. He moved west with his family, residing first in Lockport, Michigan and later in Menard County, Illinois. He married Elmira Gulick in Fulton County, Illinois on April 17, 1860, having five known children together.


Willett enlisted as a Lieutnant in Company F of the 114th Illinois Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War, enlisting on September 18, 1862 and was discharged as a 1st Lieutenant on August 3, 1865. He applied for his Civil War soldier's pension in 1879 and later joined the Grand Army of the Republic.


After the war, he and his family lived for a time in Cerro Gordo, Illinois, moving to Nebraska by 1880, residing in Midland Township and working as a clerk in a cabinet store and later in Lincoln, where he passed away.
