A native of Yancey County, N.C., he had lived in this area for the past 19 years. He was a son of the late Jackson C. and Tennessee Woody Sparks and was a retired farmer and a sawmill operator. He was a member of the Sinking Creek Baptist Church where he taught the adult men's Sunday school class and was also a former deacon. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Nannie Randolph Sparks, in 1951.
Survivors include two sons Gay Sparks, Micaville, N.C., Gaw Sparks, Johnson City; one daughter, Mrs. Chloe S. Beaver, Rock Hill, S.C.; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Zenna Hughes, St. Paul, Va.; one brother, S.J. Sparks, Palmdale, Calif.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
