Stephen the son of Janet C. Anderson of Evanston IL and Roy C. Anderson of Tustin CA enlisted in the US Marine Corps on June 15, 1965 in Chicago. LCpl Anderson was assigned for duty with Company G, 2d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During Operation PRAIRIE near the "Razorback" in the Cam Lo District of Quang Tri Province at approximately 10:50H a volley of rifle fire and three rounds of NVA 57 mm RR (Recoilless Rifle) were fired at Company G positions impacting and exploding inside the perimeter. Artillery and air strikes were requested and directed on the suspected enemy positions.

Later in the day, the Marines of the 2d Battalion were fired at with thirteen rounds which were believed to have been NVA 75mm RR (Recoilless Rifle)fire. Six Marines were killed and four were wounded in the days contacts with enemy forces.

LCpl Anderson was one of the casualties who died from multiple fragmentation wounds.
