Journalist. She was one of the most influential critics of the 20th century, who helped to establish the reputations of such filmmakers as Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg. In her 38 year career she was a consistent defender of artistic creativity, subtlety and refined craftsmanship. Her 1969 essay, "Trash, Art and the Movies", was named in 1999 as one of the top 100 examples of the best journalism of the century.
