Susan Green, part lesser band Cherokee. Lillie was the youngest of three girls and Susan died when she was less than 3 years old. Her Father remarried and had 8 half brothers and sisters who were a big part of her life even after I was born.
She and Jim Ellis married Oct 16, 1904 in Murray County, GA. They had 4 boys in 9 years. After his death in 1913, She raised her boys working primarily in thread mills and cotton mills retiring at age 65 from the Crown Cotton Mills on Chattanooga Ave. in Dalton. She bought a small farm less than 2 miles from Ernest and his family and during her last years lived with them "up the road".
I spent many a day with her and snuggled down in that feather bed at night with quilts she had made on her own quilting frame.
UPDATE: Find A Grave contributor, Thea Gossett sent me this photo of my Grandmother's marker today, May 30, 2012.
Lillie Mae Stephens Ellis - Find A Grave Memorial# 5824596.
I have never been able to verify her marriage to a Tatum. The daughter she had with him carried the last name Ellis on the 1930 census.
It had rained all night the day before she died and the grave ,where it had been dug the day before, had filled with several inches of water. She loved the ocean but this was a little much. We stood, visited, laughed and told TALES the hour it took for the water could be removed and her service begun.
Rest in peace, my sweet Grandmother.
