In 1926 the family moved from Nebraska to Ft. Collins, Colorado, where Irene's parents operated the Plum St. Grocery for 20 years. The grocery was on the main floor and living quarters were on the 2nd floor. The Todds sold the grocery store after Irene graduated from high school and purchased a home around the corner at 818 Peterson St.
During her younger years, Irene took violin lessons in junior high school on a violin made by her uncle, Louis Tinnes. He did this as payment to his sister, Jeanette, (Irene"s mother) for money he owed her. Many years later the violin was put to use once again when Irene's granddaughter, Alecia, learned to play on that same violin.
In high school Irene learned tap and ballroom dancing. She had an excellent dance instructor who later became a choreographer for Lawrence Welk. She assisted the instructor in teaching dance to help pay for her own lessons and she and other dancers often performed at Fitzsimmons Hospital, Kiwanis Club and other organizations.
As a freshman in high school she began twirling a baton and in the 11th and 12th grade she was a drum majorette.
Irene worked for the U.S.D.A. and the War Price & Rationing Board in 1942 during WW II. She also worked at Poudre Valley National Bank from 1945-1952.
She married Phillip Klein on 10-10-1948 at the Presbyterian Church in Ft. Collins where Irene was a member. They had two daughters, Cheryl who was born in 1952 and Lory, born in 1955.
Irene and Phil moved to Arvada, CO in 1958, where Phil was manager of the Safeway store. Sadly, Phil passed away in 1979 after suffering a heart attack in Rapid City, S.D.
Irene worked at Lakeside Nat'l Bank from 1967 until she retired in 1992. She also volunteered at the Arvada Police Department, working as a clerk.
Irene was an active member of the Arvada Presbyterian Church. She loved animals, gardening, walking, traveling, and most of all, her family. She was a devoted wife and mother and was loved and admired by many and will be missed by all that knew her.
