Samuel Gaston Telford was the third child of James Telford and Jane Kell Telford, who made the move from Chester County, South Carolina, to southern Illinois in 1822. James's farm was one of the stations on the Underground Railroad in the 1840s and 1850s. Samuel married Mary Baldridge in 1847, and they owned a farm near Cartter. They raised nine children. After Mary's death, Samuel married Esther Matthews Young. It was her second marriage.
According to his Civil War pension file, Samuel enlisted in the army in the Civil War and was in Co. E. 136th Volunteer Infantry.
The railroad line went through Samuel's farm land. Upon his death, his casket was transported to Salem for burial in East Lawn Cemetery, on the train, which stopped in his yard that January day. Samuel Gaston and Mary Baldridge Telford were my great great grandparents.
