Inventor. Born in Bolton, England, he was noted as a pioneer in spinning industry. Working on how to mass-produce cotton yarn in the mid 1700s, Crompton sought to approve the problem of producing strong fine yarns in quantities large enough to satisfy the demands of the mechanized looms. His efforts resulted in inventing a machine known as the spinning mule, in 1779. The spinning mule combined features of two earlier inventions into one design that would simulate the motions of a hand spinner’s fingers. His machine revolutionized the yarn and cotton mill production in England. By the early 1800s, 80% of the cotton goods bleached in England was woven on the Compton spinning mule. After his death a statue was erected to commemorate his achievements in Bolton, England.
