AUTO WRECK WEST OF HERE FATAL TO ONE
Elmer Blew, 50, Peoria, Ill., Killed Near Novinger; Weekend Toll Now Four Dead and Eight Injured.
Elmer Blew, 50, of Peoria, Ill., better known as "Al," a former Novinger resident, was instantly killed last night about 6:30 o'clock in an automobile accident two miles east of Novinger on Highway No. 6.
The accident made a total of four fatalities and eight injured in motor vehicle mishaps here involving Kirksville autos within a period of 48 hours.
Mr. Blew was en route to Novinger with his nephew, Lester Cooley, and family, when the accident occurred.
They left Peoria about 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon, planning to visit relatives at Novinger until Tuesday.
Cooley, owner of the car, a Buick sedan, said he was driving about 40 miles an hour when he was blinded by lights from an approaching car and drove too near the edge of the highway. His auto struck loose gravel, he said, and turned over.
The top of Mr. Blew's head was torn off.
Woman's Back Broken
Mrs. Cooley is in the Stickler Hospital in a critical condition as the result of a fractured fifth spinal vertebra and severe cuts and bruises.
Mr. Cooley and their son and daughter were slightly bruised and scratched.
A pet dog was riding with the family in the car when the accident occurred but has not been seen since the car overturned.
Mr. Blew had lived the greater part of his life in Macon County and lived for several years in Novinger before going to Peoria about two years ago.
He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Addie Mosley, of Youngstown; two brothers, Tom Blew, of Rothville, Mo., and Jim Blew, of Peoria, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mr. Blew were scheduled for 12:30 o'clock tomorrow at the Dee Riley Funeral Home. Burial will be made in the Novinger Cemetery.
