Mrs. Hayes was born on July 13, 1922, in Portis, Kansas, the daughter of Ben Clark and Anna Elizabeth (DeVally) St. Clair.
She had been a Manhattan resident since 1956 and was a graduate of Crum's Beauty School and Brown Mackie College. In 1956, she went to work for Betty Co-Ed Beauty Salon in Manhattan which she later owned and operated until her retirement in 1987.
Mrs. Hayes was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Manhattan. Other memberships include the Eagles Auxiliary where she served as president from 1990-91 and the V.F.W. Auxiliary. She also enjoyed being involved in volunteer work throughout the community and was president of the Colorado Plaza Association for two years.
In 1946, she was united in marriage to Edwin Macha, and he preceded her in death on September 20, 1952. On October 17, 1960, she was united in marriage to Walter K. Hayes and he preceded her in death on May 22, 1982. She was also preceded in death by her parents, one brother: LaVern St. Clair and three sisters: Eunice Thornberg, Maxine Poppen and Vonda Thompson.
Mrs. Hayes is survived by her two daughters: Beverly Speckman and husband John of Shawnee, Kansas, and Betty Lundberg and husband Mike of Manhattan, Kansas. Also surviving are four grandchildren: Scott Speckman, Ronald Frazier, Ryan Frazier and Anna Collins and six great grandchildren: Jessica Frazier, Spencer Speckman, Ava Collins, Shelby Frazier, Nicholas Speckman and Capri Collins, all of Kansas City.
The family will receive friends during a visitation from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 31, 2010, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 1, 2010, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with Reverend Nancy J Kollhoff and Pastor Andy Hargrove officiating. Interment will follow in the Riley Cemetery at Riley, Kansas.
