James Elmer Smith, 84, of Fernandina Beach, Florida, passed away Friday, August 20, 2010 surrounded by his family at Quality Health of Fernandina.

A native of Alma, Georgia, he had resided in Fernandina Beach for the past fifty-six years. During his career Mr. Smith was employed at Container Corp. of America paper mill where he worked in the box plant and the wood yard for thirty-three years until his retirement. He was a longtime and active member of Five Points Baptist Church in Fernandina.

Among his many interests he always enjoyed woodworking and was skilled at making wood crafts and loved growing, tending and caring for his garden for many years. In addition he played a vital role alongside his wife Sally Mae's successful cake baking business from their home kitchen. He was the icing maker for the many cakes they made with pride for her customers. Above all he cherished spending time with his family and many friends. Throughout his life he was always ready to help anyone he could and was a great neighbor to those in his community and will be greatly missed by all who knew him, and led a life as an example of how a Christian man should live.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years Sally Mae Smith, three children, Elaine Smith Coats (Jim), Elmer Ray Smith (Melinda), Roger Lee Smith (Jana) all of Fernandina Beach, Fla., sister, Jewel Smith Kelly, brother, Elton Smith of Gainesville, Fla., three grandchildren, Brandon Arthur Smith (Jammie) of Yulee, Fla., Courtney Lee Smith and Michael Curtis Coats both of Fernandina Beach, Fla., two great-grandchildren, Pierson James Smith and Adelaide Lucinda Smith both of Yulee, Fla., and by many nieces and nephews.
