Henry L. Gaylord was one of the earliest pioneers to the town of fertile. He settled in the area in 1878. The first winter Henry acquired a contract with Northern Pacific Railroad for 500 cords of wood, which he delivered on time.

Henry's education was minimal, but he advanced by reading law books. He wanted to be a doctor, but was squeamish around blood. He opted for law and became very successful. He had a law office and a real estate office where he did well. He sold 50 parcels of land in one week.

He was born in Rockville, Stearns County, Minnesota on Nov. 15 1857. His parents, Levi Parsons and Eliza Decker Gaylord, came from Connecticut, His father operated a Mill in Minnesota.

He was married three times. His first marriage was to Laura Briggs, with whom he had three sons. His second was to Kaspara Aagenes. They had six children. Kaspara had a daughter from a previous marriage which Henry did not like. His final marriage was Minnie Peters. He was 62 and she was 19 when they married in 1919. They had eight children. The eighth got him in Ripley's Believe it or Not.

His health began to decline in his later years. His wife Minnie left with her children to California. Henry was taken care of by a member of the community. He wandered away from the house where he was living and died. He was found frozen to death on 14 Sep 1945.
