The son of David & Mary (Liddick) Silks, in 1860 he was a shoemaker and farmer living with his parents in Buffalo Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 6" tall and had brown hair and blue eyes. He married Elizabeth M. Kroft in 1862 and fathered Isaiah (b. @1857), Hannah P. (b. @1858), Senora Alice (b. 12/02/66), Lucinda A. (b. 10/??/70), Mary C. R. (b. @1879 - married John Wesley Steele), George Washington (b. 11/08/81), and Minnie E. (b. 09/??/86).
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg August 31, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 3 as a private with Co. I, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865.
August 10, 1840, is also reported as his birthday, but he died at the stated age of 64-9-4.
