Private, Co. I, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry

Enlisted at the stated age of 42 in Bloomfield, Perry County August 25, 1864; mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 31. Falling ill and hospitalized on March 23, 1865, he nonetheless honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865. He is described in the company register as "an obedient, dutiful, and good soldier. He is in the muster roll as "Swarts."

The son of Daniel & Sophia (Meyer/Myers/Moyer) Swartz, in 1860, he was a farmer living in Saville Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 9" tall with dark hair and brown eyes.

He married Mary Pauline Berkepile February 25, 1845, and fathered infant (b./d. 1848), Jacob Bigler (b. 03/??/50), Emaline (b. 12/??/50 - married Abram Kell), Henry G. (b. @1851), Sarah Ann (b. 01/18/55 - married Wilson Freiberger Hower), Mary Catherine (b. 03/14/57 - married Thomas L. Hench), George R. (b. @1857), William Franklin (b. 02/23/59), Lillian May (b. 05/01/61), Mary Elizabeth (b. 05/08/63), Charles L. (b. 09/??/63), Lottie Kate (b. @1865), Ora M. (b. @1871), and Matilda Sherwood (b. 01/03/74).

A second marriage to Emma Lydia Swartz is alleged with children George Washington (b. @1876) and Mary B. (b. 12/??/77) but remains unverified.

He was a member of Jones Post No. 448, G.A.R., and died at his daughter Emaline's home. His obituary reports only two children then living, but that does not appear to have been true.
