Falling ill and hospitalized on March 23, 1865, he nonetheless honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865. He is described in the company register as "an obedient, dutiful, and good soldier. He is in the muster roll as "Swarts."

(b. @1851), Sarah Ann (b. 01/18/55 - married Wilson Freiberger Hower), Mary Catherine (b. 03/14/57 - married Thomas L. Hench), George R. A second marriage to Emma Lydia Swartz is alleged with children George Washington (b. @1876) and Mary B. (b. 12/??/77) but remains unverified.
He was a member of Jones Post No. 448, G.A.R., and died at his daughter Emaline's home. His obituary reports only two children then living, but that does not appear to have been true.
