SHOT & KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY
WWII VETERAN
Off. Brightwell, a 4 year veteran of the Howard County Police Department, and a K-9 officer was on routine patrol at approximately 1:00 AM on May 29, 1961. He made a traffic stop of a yellow Nash on Fels Lane in Ellicott City occupied by two males for a loud muffler. Unknown to Off. Brightwell was the fact that the two occupants of the vehicle had just robbed a Conoco gas station near the intersection of Rt. 40 & Rt. 29 in Howard County and had murdered the gas station attendant. As Off. Brightwell was speaking with the driver, the broadcast for the suspects for the murder driving a yellow car was transmitted over the police radio. Apparently the suspects heard the broadcast at the same time the officer did and immediately shot Off. Brightwell at close range killing him. Off. brightwell's K-9 partner "Prince" was secured in the police car and was unhurt in the incident. The two suspects were apprehended a short time later on Rolling Road in Baltimore County. They were tried and convicted of both murders but amazingly were both paroled after just 16 years in jail. Off. Brightwell was survived by his wife and two children. He was the first Howard County Police Officer to be killed in the line of duty.
OFF. BRIGHTWELL IS HONORED ON THE NATIONAL POLICE OFFICERS MEMORIAL ON PANEL 31E LINE 17
WE HONOR HIS MEMORY SO THAT HE IS NEVER FORGOTTEN
