Royalty, born at Fontainebleau as youngest son of Henri IV and Marie de Medici. He was first married to Marie de Bourbon, duchess of Montpensier who bore him one daughter, Anne-Marie, later known as the Grande Madmoiselle. After her death he married Marguerite de Lorriane (twice 1632-1634, and 1643-1660) who bore him four daugthers. Their only son, Jean Gaston, died only two years old.
