He was the son of Samuel Flint Mulkey - a World War 1 veteran and Florence Amelia Sweeny.

Don was a fighter pilot with the 86th Fighter Squadron, 79th Fighter Group - US Army Air Corps. On April 18th, 1944 he went missing in action and was later determined to have died in Vignanello, Italy. At the time of his death, the 79th was tasked with the support of the allied push towards Rome, seeing action at the Anzio Beachhead and at Cassino. He was awarded the Purple Heart
