Wilton L. Abbott, the son of Harmon Wilton Abbott and Minnie Octavia (née Cox) Abbott, was born on March 22, 1917, in South Carolina. He was a resident of Greenville, Greenville County in that state when he enlisted in Charlotte, North Carolina on January 15, 1942 in the United States Army Air Corps "for the duration of the War or other emergency, plus six months, subject to the discretion of the President or otherwise according to law". He had completed two years of high school, and had been employed as a stock clerk. He was 5'8" tall, and weighed 125 lbs.
Technical Sergeant Abbott, service number 14062121, a member of the 778th Bomber Squadron, 464th Bomber Group, Heavy was killed in action on October 13, 1944. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal and Air Medal, and buried at Plot B Row 31 Grave 55 at the Ardennes American Cemetery at Neupré (Neuville-en-Condroz), near Liège, Belgium.
During World War II, the 778th Bombardment Squadron was a B-24 Liberator heavy bomb squadron which saw combat with Fifteenth Air Force stationed in Italy, assigned to the 464th Bombardment Group.
