Technical Sgt Joe Meade, age 20, veteran of 21 missions with the "Hell's Angels" squadron of the Eighth Air Forces, was drowned in a lake in England while swimming with two of his companions, his parents Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Meade, 3013 Second Avenue South, have been informed.

In a letter written by one of the youths, it was stated that while the three crewmen were swimming in a lake near camp, Sergeant Meade evidently developed a cramp and drowned immediately. His body was recovered 20 minutes later, and although artificial respiration was administered, he failed to respond. Armorer waist gunner on a Flying Fortress, the local man had expected to arrive home soon, his parents said.

Saturday night a brother, Richard, Seaman First Class in the navy, returned from a year's duty in the South Pacific. Two other brothers, David and Gerald, of this city, survive.

Sergeant Meade was born here and was a graduate of the Ursuline Academy. He was a Tribune carrier and was employed by the Nash-Finch Co., and the Grogan-Robinson Lumber Co., prior to his enlistment two years ago. He went overseas last December, and was awarded the Air Medal with three oak clusters for his 21 missions completed.

This bio is from a newspaper article (which is attached), about my dad's oldest brother and my uncle, Joseph James Meade. It was found by sheparddi & Karen Markwell in the Great Falls Tribune (Great Falls, Montana) Sun 05 Aug 1945, Page 1.
