In a letter written by one of the youths, it was stated that while the three crewmen were swimming in a lake near camp, Sergeant Meade evidently developed a cramp and drowned immediately. His body was recovered 20 minutes later, and although artificial respiration was administered, he failed to respond. Armorer waist gunner on a Flying Fortress, the local man had expected to arrive home soon, his parents said.
Saturday night a brother, Richard, Seaman First Class in the navy, returned from a year's duty in the South Pacific. Two other brothers, David and Gerald, of this city, survive.
Sergeant Meade was born here and was a graduate of the Ursuline Academy. He was a Tribune carrier and was employed by the Nash-Finch Co., and the Grogan-Robinson Lumber Co., prior to his enlistment two years ago. He went overseas last December, and was awarded the Air Medal with three oak clusters for his 21 missions completed.
