Memorial Services Held Sunday For Sgt. Clyde Martin

A memorial service honoring Sergeant Clyde Sidney Martin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Zack Martin, was held at the First Methodist Church here Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock, with the Rev. D. S. Patterson in charge, assisted by Dr. A. T. Cline and Rev. E. Kelly Barnes.

A simple but impressive service was held, in which an organ prelude by Mrs. C. M. McClure, was followed by the hymn, "Abide With Me," by the church choir. A beautiful duet, "Sunset and Evening Star," was sung by Mrs. Royce Sewell and Mrs. Rufus Harding.

Brief messages were brought by Dr. Cline and Mr. Barnes, followed by the Rev. Mr. Patterson, who closed the service with a beautiful tribute.

During the three discourses the speakers gave interesting biographies on the life of Clyde Sidney Martin, who was born July 7, 1920, in this city. He had actively participated in all school activities, and was an outstanding student and athlete.

Following graduation here, Clyde entered North Georgia College, where he was prominent in all phases of school life, graduating with honors in June 1939.

Entering the University of Georgia, he continued his studies until the mid-term of his senior year. During the early fall of 1942, he was made assistant coach of the Toccoa High School football team, serving without pay, and devoted his energy and skill in behalf of his Alma Mater, to which he was ever loyal.

He volunteered for service with the Army Air Corps on October 20, 1942, and following the months of service in various fields in this country, was sent overseas to England, where he landed in January, 1944. His death came there on May 2.

Surviving, in addition to the parents are two brothers, Lieut. Wallace Martin, U. S. Army, and Dan Martin, student of Emory University School of Medicine, and a sister, Miss Fay Martin.
====
Note: While at North Georgia, Clyde won the Golden Gloves State Boxing Championship. In honor of his life and service, his mother Retha Acree Martin set up a Memorial Park for fallen veterans in Toccoa, Georgia, surrounded by azaleas.
