Pfc. Bruce was the son of Mr. and Mrs. William M. Bruce, Jr., Washington, D.C., former residents of Cumberland. He was a grandson of Mrs. William M. Bruce, 209 Greene street, and of the late William M. Bruce. His maternal grandfather, Robert Gunning, a former resident of Lonaconing, resides in Huntingdon, W. Va.
A native of Cumberland, Pfc. Bruce was a graduate of the Hagerstown High School in 1940, and at the time of entering the armed forces on March 15, 1943, was a law student at National University, Washington, D.C. His regular military training program was supplemented with a course of specialized training at Texas A. and M. University. He fought as a member of the 395th Infantry of the 99th Division. Pfc. Bruce has a brother in the Army, Cpl. Robert G. Bruce, serving with an anti-aircraft outfit in France. (article amended to include mention of this soldier only)
