Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until January 24, 1946.

Orvel served as a Staff Sergeant & Gunner on B-24D "Sexy Sue" (#41-23938), 98th Bomber Squadron, 11th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Bandera County, Texas prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on August 2, 1940, prior to the war, at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a mechanic and also as Single, without dependents.

The crew of B-24 "Sexy Sue" took off from their base on the Tarawa Airfield on a night mission to bomb the Wotje Atoll area of the Marshall Islands. They did not return to base.

Orvel was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission.

He was awarded the Air Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart.
