April 29, 1945 - Fletcher-class Destroyer USS Hazelwood (DD 531), operating off Okinawa on radar picket and escort patrols, was badly damaged by Kamikazes. Ten of the ship's 19 officers, including its Commanding Officer, Commander Volckert Petrus Douw of Abingdon, MD., and 67 enlisted men were killed or missing in action.
