Ltjg Benton served aboard USS Essex (CV-9) as a Hellcat pilot with VF-9. During a pre-dawn strike against Roi-Namur, Ltjg Benton's plane took off of the Essex and flew for about two minutes until he crashed into the sea. The plane hit the water and exploded. Destroyers searched for a trace of Benton, but the search came up negative.
