According to the book "The Kentucky Ponders" Jennie's husband Josiah Norton was killed by bushwackers during the civil was leaving Jennie with several children to raise. She loaded up an ox cart with her kids and a few esentials and headed West. She forded the Ohio river near where it joins the Mississippi, at "Cairo Illinois" and crossed Missouri to Clarksville Arkansas. Finding Clarksville to tame, she loaded up again and went to the hill country of N.W. Arkansas. Jennie and the kids hacked out a road, built a log cabin, and called the place "Hickory Grove" According to the book they were the first settlers in that area. Jennie never found another man to match her spirit so she never remarried. Untill the old Chappel was painted in preparation for the Warren N.Sams reunion at Nail, summer of 2001, Hickory Grove could still be faintly seen on the old Chappel which stands near the Hickory Grove cemetary
