115 Squadron's Avro Lancaster I (#HK599) aircraft, with an aircrew of seven, took off in the morning from RAF Witchford for an air operation flight over Duisburg, Germany. It is thought that HK599 was hit and shot down by flak, crashing and taking the lives of six members of the crew. One airman survived the crash, but was captured and imprisoned in a German PoW camp.
