LTC US ARMY - WORLD WAR II
LYNN, Mass. - Lt. Col. Earl G. Bacon, 91, of Lynn, died peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2010, at a local nursing home after a lengthy illness.
Earl was born in Boston on Nov. 29, 1918, and was raised in Sidney, Maine, and lived most of his life in Lynn. Earl graduated from Williams High School, Oakland, Maine, in 1936. He graduated from the University of Maine, Orono with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1940, and also finished the Reserve Officers' Training Corps program in 1940 as a commissioned officer in the Army.

Earl worked for General Electric River Works plant in Lynn from 1940 until retiring in 1982. He was called to active duty in January of 1941, initially stationed in Boston Harbor and various locations in the Caribbean commanding, training troops and protecting the United States coast from submarine penetration. Capt. Bacon was known for his compassion and was on more than one occasion after the war was over, thanked for saving the life of a trainee by insisting he learn to swim even though swimming was not a required skill.
After the war, Earl remained in the Army Reserves and attained the rank of lieutenant colonel. Earl earned a second bachelor's degree in business from Colby College in Waterville, Maine, as a part-time student after the war.
Earl is survived by his wife of 58 "long, glorious" years, Pauline (Landry) Bacon; his daughter Linda Bacon; son-in-law Wayne Cormier; grandchildren Richard Cormier and Sarah Cormier; daughter-in-law Janice Zorian Bacon, and grandchildren William G. "Billy" Bacon and Alexander "Alex" Bacon.

Earl was predeceased by his son, William Bacon; his brother, Otis Bacon; sister-in-law Catherine "Kay" Bacon and his parents Zalmon and Jeannette Bacon.
Committal services will be at Sawtelle Cemetery in Sidney, Maine. (Morning Sentinel 8/5/2010)
