MUNFORDVILLE - Jeffery Alan Staples, 52, of Munfordville died Dec. 21, 2008, at University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington.

The Ohio native was born March 23, 1956. He was in law enforcement for 26 years serving with the Edmonton City Police, Horse Cave City Police, with the remaining 13 years as Hart County sheriff. He was named Sheriff of the Year in 1998. He was a DARE teacher for several years and a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a son of the late Geraldine Hudson Staples and Jeff D. Staples Jr. of Munfordville, who survives. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Thomas Chaney.

Funeral is at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Brooks Funeral Home, with burial in Munfordville City Cemetery. Visitation is from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to WLOC-AM's "Clothes for Kids."

Other survivors include his wife, Jenny Chaney Staples; two daughters, Jamie Staples-Bussell and her husband, Adam, and April Goble and her husband, Joe, all of Munfordville; a son, Jeremy Staples and his wife, Cricket, of Cub Run; six grandchildren, Madison Underwood, Aliyah Goble, Miranda Fields, Lynnley Bentley, Trevor Chase Goble and Allie Bussell; a sister, Sandra Renick of Sevierville, Tenn.; a mother-in-law, Berniece Chaney of Legrande; and a brother-in-law, Teddy Chaney and his wife, Pam, of Legrande.
