Roy Throckmorton, a retired commissioned warrant officer with the U.S.Marine Corps was the son of Hammett and Annie Goode Throckmorton. Chief Throckmorton was the last man in the Washington D.C. area to enlist under the voluntary status program before the draft was reenacted. He chose the Marine Corps Reserve and served a two-year active duty tour at Parris Island, SC and Camp Lejeune NC. In 1944 attained the rank of technical sergeant and he was promoted to warrant officer in 1949. In January 1946, he returned to inactive status and was one of four reservists to attend Marine Fighter Squadron-321's at its first drill following post war activation. He returned to active duty during the Korean War and after that, he was assigned to the Marine Air Control Squadron 24 as a supply officer. During his Marine Corps career he was awarded two Presidential Unit Citations, the Navy Unit Commendation, two awards of the U.S.Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, the Organized Marine Corps Reserve Medal, two awards of the American Defense Service Medal, the American Campaign Medal, three awards of the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the China Service Medal, the National Defense Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the Marine Corps Reserve Medal.

The Chief was one of the original "weekend warriers". Originally the reserves attended drills one half day each week. In 1946, they began training on the two-day weekend in order to assure maximum flight time for pilots and it was then that they were dubbed "weekend warriers".

In civilian life, Throckmorton was the representative for a company that distributed Rockingham Poultry. He was a member of the Thomas J. Shryock Masonic Lodge No. 223 A.F. and A.M. in Hollywood and the American Legion Post 225 of Ridge.

He is survived by his second wife Mary Guerard who he married on Sept 2, 1976 at St. Nicholas Chapel at Patuxent River Naval Air Station, two daughters, two sons, and five grandchildren. In addition to his parents, and his first wife Alice Marmaduke Throckmorton, he was preceded in death by his brother Thomas. Expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions should be made to the St. Andrew's Episcopal Parish Restoration Fund.
