Born on March 12,1726/27 to John Ball and the former Sarah Dickens, Edward Ball II was a third generation resident of Block Island, and a grandson and namesake of Edward Ball, the paterfamilias of the island's Ball Family. He married Mary Dodge, the daughter of Nathaniel Dodge and the former Margaret Pullins, and died in the "70th year of his age". His grave is marked by a red sandstone stele carved in the robust bas relief style often seen in the Connecticut-Rhode Island area. The portrait-type soul effigy in the tympanum is surrounded by undulating lines suggesting waves, wings, and vines. Apparently broken at some point, it was repaired and mounted on an inscribed base which confirms the date of Mr. Ball's death as 1796. The inscription reads

"In Memory of
Mr. Edward Ball
who died June 17th 1796
in the 70th year of his age
A kind husband tender Father
affectionate friend and well
beloved by all his acquaintance

As you pass by pray cast an eye
As you are now so once was I
As I am now so must you be
Prepare for death and follow me."
