Lemuel Adams, former postmaster of Greenville and one time deputy sheriff & county clerk of Bond County and for many years connected in an official capacity with the National Treasury Dept., died at his home in Washington, D.C. April 13, 1904.

Lemuel Adams was born in Dayton, Ohio, April 30, 1831 and could trace his ancestry back to John Ap Adams, who left the marshes of Wales in 1310 and settled in England. He came with his parents to Bond County in 1852 and settled in Mills township. His father, John Adams and his mother died in Greenville in 1877, both in the same week.

At the age of 17 he left home to learn the blacksmith trade in Indianapolis, but in 1850 came to Illinois and was employed in a blacksmith & and wagon shop until May 11, 1861, when prompted by patriotic impulses he joined Co. D. 22 Ill. Inf. and was made Second Lieutenant. He participated in the battles of Charleston, Belmont, Farmington, Columbia and the seige of Cornith and at the battle of Belmont was wounded in the left arm and hip. He was taken prisoner and sent to Kentucky, but after a few days was exchanged. He was then confined in the hospital for three months, and while there was promoted to the rand of First Lieutenant.

In July 1862 he rejoined his regiment, and the following November his health being completely broken down, resigned his position and returned home.

Mr. Adams was married in 1862 to Miss Julia E. Birge, daughter of Ansel and Milicent Birge and sister of Misses Julia and Alice Birge of this city. She died in 1874 leaving three children, Emma, wife of Edward Arment of St. Louis, Cora, wife of William Buchanan of Milton, Kentucky and Edwards who died in California a few months ago.

In 1882 Mr. Adams married Miss Anna Morris of Indiana, who with one daughter Mattie E. survives. Mr. Adams had been with the Treasury Department for about fourteen years at the time of his death and was nest to the highest offical in the division of acccounts. Burial was at Montrose Cemetery.
