Rev. E. Ernest Kaufman, 73, 3400 Lanewood, former Muncie District Superintendent for North Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church, died late Sunday evening at Ball Hosital following an extended illness.
Rev. Kaufman was born in Summitville, was graduated from Dunkirk High School and later attended Franklin College. The recipient of an honorary doctor of divinity degree when he was appointed local superintendent, Dr. Kaufman had served churches in the North Indiana Conference since 1925. Communities where Rev. Kaufman had resided while he was pastor include Valentine, where he began his active ministry. Wakarusa, Warren, Sheridan, Union City, and Bluffton.
Following his term as local district superintendent from 1954 to 1958, Dr. Kaufman was pastor in churches at Elkhart and Kendallville before returning to Muncie as associate pastor of High Street United Methodist Church in 1966 and at Gethsemane United Methodist Church in 1968, the latter a church which was planned and constructed during his superintendency in Muncie.
He was a member of The United Methodist Conference and attended Gethsemane United Methodist Church Masonic Lodge at Elkhart.
At one time, Rev. Kaufman served for eight years on the board of the Warren Methodist Memorial Home and had been a member of the executive committee of the Preacher's Aid Society. He had also been a liason officer between the Conference Board of Pensions and the General Board of Pensions at Evanston, Ill. He had served on the Wesley Foundation Board at Purdue University.
Surviving are his wife, Marguerite; a son, Charles E. Kaufman, Assistant Director of Admissions at Ball State University; two sisters, Mrs. Clarence Miller, Valparaiso and Mrs. Elmer Collins, Anderson; and three grandsons.
Services will be held at Gethsemane United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Wednesday with Dr. G. Ben Hershberger officiating, assisted by Rev. William Meddock and Dr. A. Hunter Colpitts. Burial will be in Dunkirk at the IOOF Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Meeks Mortuary from 2-4 and from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.
