Hazel Mildred Beals was born September 28, 1907 near Hastings, IA. She was one of nine children of John Sylvester and Lydia Emmaline (Garst) Beals. She attended various country schools and graduated from Emerson High School in 1926.

On August 25, 1929 she married Vaughn V. Hoover, son of Harry A. and Daisy Blackburn Hoover at Glemood. They lived in several homes in Malvern, moving to their present home in 1943.

They have one daughter, Phyllis (Mrs. Darrell) Frederickson.

Hazel was baptized in the Emerson Baptist Church as a young girl and brought her membership to First Baptist, Malvern, when she moved here. She taught Sunday school for 35 years; served as Sunday School Superintendent, sang in the choir and enjoyed association with young people. She was past President of the Baptist Missionary Society and Baptist Kensington.

Hazel was a long time member and past President of the Malvern Garden Club. She loved flowers and always had a flower garden and she shared generously.

Hazel was a strong family person and enjoyed visits from and with family and friends. She was an extraordinary home maker and wonderful cook made guests feel most welcome. She was good natured with a grand sense of humor.

Vaughn and Hazel enjoyed trips to Montana, Colorado, Wyoming, Tennessee and Ohio where they visited relatives and friends:

Her hobbies were sewing, embroidery and writing poetry. For many years her topical poems were printed in The Malvern Leader and a favorite Christmas radio program used them,

Hazel enjoyed watching her grandchildren grow up as her next door neighbors and was delighted to have two great-grandchildren.

In later years failing health caused curtailment of many of her activities. She did, however, continue, writing poetry.

She entered the Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital on May 20 where she died on July 17, 1987: She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers; Robert, Marion, Ray and Dale.

She is survived by her husband, Vaughn; a daughter, Phyllis (Mrs. Darrell) Frederickson; grandchildren, Karl Frederickson and wife, Sherry, of Omaha; Kim Frederickson Wilson and husband,. Darrell, of rural Pacific Junction and Karen Frederickson of Malvern; and two great-grandchildren, Jesse Frederickson and Nicole, Wilson; a sister, Mrs. Grace Staten of Glenwood; brothers, John and Dallas Beals of Edgar, Mt. and Max Beals of Lincoln, NE; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Hazel's life was a witness to her Christian faith and her poem "I Understand" has comforted many friends,
