Extract from the ""Daily Tribune" of Bismarck, North Dakota dated 15 Jan 1913:
Glen Ullin, Jan. 14 - The beautiful home of J. L. Pettis, the local liveryman, was destroyed by fire at an early hour this morning. The cause of the fire is unknown, though there is an unconfirmed rumor about the street that some member of the family was trying to start a fire with gasoline. Nothing was saved, the family barely escaping. Loss is estimated at $4,000; insurance said to be $2,800.

Extract from the ""Daily Tribune" of Bismarck, North Dakota dated 20 Mar 1914:
Wednesday night a large delegation arrived in Bismarck from Glen Ullin, most of them being witnesses in the case brought in federal court by J. K. Pettis of Glen Ullin, against the Standard Oil company, who claims his house was destroyed by an explosion caused because there was gasoline in the kerosene he used. Among those coming here for the case were: A. L. Tavis, August Herman, George Schautz, Wm. Lutgen, H. F. Beethloto, Gust A. Falk, Frank Tangener, Wm. Kloth, C. Pennington, E. C. Hudson, Peter Wilmes and several others. Bitzing & Langer of Mandan are said to be attorneys in the case, as is A. T. Faber of Glen Ullin.

John K. Pettis
Dies in St. Paul
John K. Pettis, of Glen Ullin, N.D., died at Mounds Park hospital, St. Paul, Wednesday morning. Mr. Pettis was a former resident of this city and left here 31 years ago. He is survived by his widow, one son, Edward Pettis, of Superior, three daughters, Mrs. H. W. Richardson, Sweet Grass, Mont.; Mrs. C. Berndt. St. Paul, and Mrs. Cecil Ireland, Valley City, N.D.; one sister, Mrs. Ira E. Smith, Tomahawk, Wis, and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held in Eau Claire Saturday at 2 p.m. from Lenmark's. The Rev. J. H. Norenberg will officiate and interment will be in Forest Hill cemetery, under Masonic auspices.
