Funeral services were conducted Friday, March 16, 2 p.m. from the chapel of the Morris-Leiman Funeral home for William Lawson "Bill" Prater, 66 who died on Wednesday morning, March 14, at his home in Mt. Vernon. Mr. Prater had been in poor health for some years but continued to carry on business as a dealer in farm machinery from his home until his death. In later years he engaged services of a driver in making trips about the area. His death was attributed to a heart attack.
Known throughout the area as "Bill" or "Willie", Mr. Prater was born in Dade county. June 4, 1889, son of the late Albert and Nannie Hill Prater. He spent most of his life in the area of Dade, Lawrence and Green counties. Mr. Prater was well known as a "trader" in the area and at one time bought and shipped furs and hides in large quantities.
He is survived by two sons, Coe and Carl Prater: three brothers, Same of Everton and Willard and McKinley of South Greenfield: three sisters, Mrs. Helen Godfrey of Los Angeles, Calif.: Mrs. Grace McGee of Pomona, Calif., and Mrs. Robbie Crawford of St. Joseph, Mo.: two grandsons and many other relatives in the area.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Roy T. Nunn of M. Vernon and burial was made in Shiloh Cemetery under direction of Morris-Leiman.
