Nicholas Roosevelt was 2nd youngest of 15 children born to Jacobus Roosevelt (1724-1777). He eventually became a partner and agent for Robert Fulton, John Stevens and Robert Livingston. Nicholas built his first steamboat in October 1811, took out a patent before Robert Fulton patented his steamboat and after a lengthy court battle, Roosevelt was allowed to established his claim as inventor of the sidewheel steamer and the vertical paddlewheel. He was also the lead surveyor of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers.

He and his wife rode the first steamboat, "New Orleans," down the Ohio River to the Mississippi River to New Orleans in 1811. They had 9 children.
