John was a son of Thomas Rothrock (from York County, Pennsylvania, who moved to Centre County, Pennsylvania) (1794-1834) and Anna Maria (Mary or Polly) Metzel Rothrock (c1794-1839). After his parents died, John was made a ward of his Uncle, James Rothrock (1782-1853) in 1845.

John first married to Hannah Lorraine Marshall (1837-1915) in c1855. In 1860 the family was living at Marion Township, Centre County, Pennsylvania with two children. John was listed as a master tailor. They were living with Hannah's parents. By 1880 the family was living at Newton, Jasper County, Iowa with their two youngest children (the youngest, Helen, born 1872 in Iowa). John was again listed as a tailor. In 1885 the family was still living at Newton. John and Hannah were the parents of four children, of whom only three are identified, one boy and two girls.

In 1895 John was separated or divorced from Hannah and living alone at Newton. John married a second time to Dorcas Morgan Thompson (1823-1910) on 16 Jul 1896 at Albion, Marshall County, Iowa. John and Dorcas had no children. In 1900 John and Dorcas were living alone at Iowa Township, Marshall County, Iowa. Hannah was living alone at Newton, Jasper County, Iowa and running a boarding house. John married a third time to Emily, who died shortly after in 1911.
