Two Ashland RD1 boys were killed yesterday afternoon when the mini-bike they were riding was hit broadside by a car on a Township road at Cresswell Gardens, Fountain Springs.
The victims were John Neumeister, 9, believed to be the operator of the bike, and Donald George, 12.
Mahanoy City State Police said the accident happened at 12:45 pm along the road leading south from Route 61, toward Cardinal Brennan High School.
The automobile, which struck the bike, was operated by Eleanor Frances Baney, 31, of Cresswell Gardens.
Police said Miss Baney was traveling from Rt. 61 toward Cresswell Gardens when the mini-bike came from a dirt road across the highway and directly into the path of the car.
The Neumeister boy was pronounced dead on-arrival at the Ashland State Hospital at 1:05 pm by Dr. Stephen Slaton. Police said the boy suffered a fractured skull and his right leg had been severed above the knee.
At first, it was believed that the Neumeister boy was alone on the bike. Later in the afternoon, the family of the George boy reported him missing. His body was discovered about 6 pm. He was pronounced dead at Ashland Hospital, the result of a fracture of the neck and crushed chest.
