The quest to find Delila started with my desire to put the pieces of family history together for my children. I found myself hunting through old cemeteries. Delila and her brother were a mystery I had difficulty solving. I'm so thankful to the folks at the Greenbrier Historical Society for their help. In my journey to find Delila one warm August day, I followed the trail from along the road to a cow pasture where I had been told "be sure to close the gate" which of course I did. Being a city girl however, I was not as prepared as one might expect when following the ruts in the field and noticing how very big cows actually are when they start walking behind you! After what seemed a long distance, around the corner of an old house, I looked around the landscape for any sign of a graveyard. Those moments are intriguing for someone who knows nothing about country living and was ill prepared, but eventually I saw the stones nestled in the valley and surrounded by a barbwire fence. Determination and a good bit of stupidity led me to decide I could crawl between the wires and get inside the graveyard. Imagine my surprise when I realized that climbing out again (uphill) was going to be more of a challenge than I knew. The sun was starting to go down when it occurred to me what a silly thing I had done, all alone out in the countryside and no one knowing where I was. When I finally freed myself from the barbwire and made my way over the cow piles and back to my car, I was quite glad to give thanks to God who watches over foolish people. To this day I tell friends this story, but I also tell them about Delilia and that she is not lost or forgotten. Maybe no one will ever stumble upon this story or know Delilia, but I am grateful for the experience of getting to know more of Boone history. I am related by marriage to Mary Elizabeth Boone Hefner. The family story continues. Rest in peace Delilia.
