Richard Wayne Herring was born on June 26, 1955 in Junction City, Boyle Co., Kentucky. He was the son of Marvin Stanley Herring, Sr. (1934-1994) and Rose "Rosie" Stephens (1936- ).

Richard's father Marvin, a native of Boyle Co., KY, was the son of James "Jim" Herring (1907-1989) and Ella Sue Strevels (1911-1977). His parents were also natives of Boyle Co., KY.

Richard's mother Rosie, born on Tennessee Ridge near Parksville, Boyle Co., KY, was the daughter of Edward J. Stephens (1910-1996) and Nellie B. Wilson (1916-1995).

Edward, Richard's paternal grandfather, was born in Isham, Scott Co., Tennessee, the son of General Jackson George Washington Stephens (1874-1959) and Dora Mae Spradlin (1881-1924).

Nellie, Richard's maternal grandmother, was born near Strunk, McCreary Co., KY, the daughter of Harlan Jacob Wilson (1887-1965) and Amanda Etter King (1890-1964).

As a youth Richard attended Junction City School, loved working and playing outdoors and especially loved fishing. His love for the outdoors resulted in a number of jobs working on farms over the years. Richard also retained his love for fishing throughout his life. His mother was quoted as saying "His one true passion in life was fishing".

Richard was a good natured man who always seemed to have a smile on his face. He was well-liked by all who knew him. He lived in or near Junction City, Boyle Co., KY most of his live except when working farm jobs in Woodford County and Jessamine County.

Richard died in 2008 at his home in Junction City. He had suffered from diabetic complications for several years. He was only 52 years of age.

Richard was buried in the Wilson Fairview Cemetery located on White Oak Road just outside Junction City. The small family cemetery was established in 1964 by his great-grandfather Jacob Harlan Wilson and Richard's great-grandmother Amanda Etter King Wilson was the first burial. Richard had been born in his great-grandparent's home, located at 4340 White Oak Road, just a short walking distance from the cemetery.
