Grace Stella Perkins was the daughter of Alfred E. Perkins (1867-1947) and Mary A. Kinsey (1870-1934). As a child she attended the Baltic grammar school, and in 1926 she graduated from Painesdale High School. The family attended the Methodist-Episcopal church in Baltic. She first married Laurence Perry Gonyea (1905-1954) on 14 May 1927 in Houghton, Houghton County, Michigan. The couple raised two children, Mary Joyce (married Christner and Wren) Gonyea (1928-2000), and David Lawrence Gonyea (1935-2005). Grace's second husband was Oscar E. Sundstedt, Jr (1897-1986). She taught for many years at the Michigan School for the Deaf in Flint, MI, and was a devoted member of the Methodist church.

My grandmother, "Granny G", as she liked us to call her, gave me a book mark when I was a young boy, which contains the following quotation:

"Lord,
Today, let me do all the good I can, for I may not pass this way again." (author unknown)

My grandmother lived her life this way, giving and doing good at every opportunity. The well-worn book mark is priceless to me, as is the profound lesson this simple prayer teaches.

The world is a better place because of this dear lady, and I'm a better man for having known her.
