Mary "Ruth" Simpson, age 81, of Danville, passed away Tuesday, February 22, 2011.

She was born November 20, 1929 in Mill Springs, Ky., to James Milton and Dina Walker Corder.

She and her late husband, Hayden McKinley Simpson, were the co-owners of Atoka Grocery Store for 28 years.

She was a 1949 graduate of Wayne County High School and a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Noah Club and a Noah singer. She was also a member of Special People Advocacy Network (S.P.A.N.). She was instrumental in getting the first special education class in Boyle County. She enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as painting and crocheting.

She is survived by her sons-Hayden Michael (Carol) Simpson, Ralph Edward Simpson, both of Danville, Richard Dean Simpson, of Tunnel Hill, Ga.; her daughter-Teresa Simpson (Paul) Cross of Chatsworth, Ga.; three sisters-June Guffey, of Bronston, Nancy Higginbotham and Helen Ramsey, both of Monticello.

She is also survived by eight grandchildren-Chris (Melodie) Cross, Nikki (Steve) Patrick, D.J. (Alanta) Cross, Jimmy Defore, Matthew Joshua (Sarah Bell) Simpson, Luis Felipe Simpson, Steven Craig (A.J.) Simpson, Sarah Ruth (Mathew) Gilreath; six great-grandchildren-Caleb Preston Cross, Drayton Kyle Simpson, Carlie Peyton Cross, Elijah Chad Simpson, Colt David Cross, and Olivia Michelle Simpson.

She was preceded in death by her brothers-Randel Corder and Ray Corder and a granddaughter-Michelle Lynn Simpson.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 26, 2011 at Gethsemane Baptist Church. Burial was in the Elk Springs Cemetery, Monticello, Ky. Bro. Clyde Strunk officiated the 3 p.m. graveside service at Elk Springs Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Matthew Simpson, Luis Simpson, Steven Simpson, D.J. Cross, Steve Patrick, Jimmy Defore and Chris Cross. Honorary pallbearers were the Wayne County High School Class of 1949.
